Yerba maté makes a bold infusion with earthy, grassy notes and a pleasantly bitter finish. Enjoy this loose leaf tea as a warm morning brew or prepare it ahead for an iced drink. Yerba maté naturally contains caffeine.

    Brew

Start with 1 teaspoon per 250 mL water at about 80°C. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes, then strain. Adjust the leaf quantity and steeping time to suit your taste.

    Drink

Enjoy plain or with a slice of lemon. For iced tea, brew with hot water first, strain, cool promptly and refrigerate before serving over ice.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is yerba maté tea?

Yerba maté is a traditional South American infusion made from the yerba maté plant. It is also written as yerba mate.

    Does yerba maté contain caffeine?

Yes. Unlike many herbal infusions, yerba maté naturally contains caffeine. The amount in your cup varies with the quantity used and how you brew it.

What does yerba maté taste like?

Expect a grassy, earthy flavour with some bitterness. A lighter brew is a good starting point if you are trying it for the first time.

Is yerba maté the same as green tea?

No. Yerba maté and green tea come from different plants. Both naturally contain caffeine, but they have different flavour profiles.

Do I need a gourd and bombilla?

No. These are traditional brewing tools, but you can also use a teapot, tea filter or infuser and strain the leaves before drinking.

Can I drink yerba maté cold?

Yes. Prepare a hot infusion, strain, cool promptly and refrigerate. Serve over ice with lemon or mint if you like.

    How should I store it?

Keep sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, strong odours and moisture. Use a dry spoon and follow the best before date on your pack.
