    Simple Remedies for Brittle Nails

    Simple Remedies for Brittle Nails

Ever looked at someone’s perfectly manicured nails and thought how lovely their hands looked? Nails, when healthy, look great; however brittle nails are a different story. Split, peeling, chipping easily, ridging, and even finding them hard to get any decent length, could all be indicators that you have brittle nails.

What are some of the reasons we experience brittle nails?

Your hands are one of the tell-tale signs of aging and as we age, so do our fingernails and toenails. Brittle nails can also be caused by this natural aging process or by simply from a lack of moisture. On the more alarming side, brittle nails can also be a sign of an underlying condition like fungal nail diseases or even hyperthyroidism.

Some other common factors for brittle nails include:

    • Prolonged exposure to dry or cold weather
    • An overabundance of washing your hands
    • Sunburn and windburn
    • Exposure to chemicals, in particular, nail polish removers
    • Repeated trauma to the nails (fake nails are included here too)
    • An iron deficiency

So, what are some of the ways you can treat brittle nails?

Pending you do not have an underlying condition of your brittle nails, Bondi Beach Tea Co. have listed below some of the simple ways that you could try to prevent or cure brittle nails.

    1. Drink plenty of water

We all know that drinking enough water is vital for our health and wellbeing, and this is no different for the health of your nails. As well as staying hydrated with clean, fresh, water, you might even like to mix up your intake with some freshly brewed herbal teas or fresh fruits.

    1. Minimise water exposure on your nails

Regular household chores like washing the dishes and cleaning with chemicals or soaps can play havoc on the health of your nails. We recommend you invest in some rubber gloves to wear while you are undertaking your household duties.

    1. Use a good hand cream

Moisturising your hands with a good hand cream is vital for nail health. After washing your hands, simply apply some hand and nail cream after you dry your hands. So that you remember to do so, just leave a pot of your favourite hand cream beside the basin.

    1. Vitamin E booster

If your nails are really looking undernourished, you could apply some vitamin E directly to them. Using the liquid that you can obtain from a vitamin E capsule, simply pop it on your nail and rub it in for a highly-potent nail booster.

    1. Steer clear of artificial nails

If you are experiencing problems with your nails, artificial nails may make your problem even worse. Your nails need the moisture and love they can get from being ‘free’, so don’t try to cover up your problem with a bigger problem.

If you are experiencing pain or irritation from your brittle nails, it’s best to get them checked out by a dermatologist in case it is something a little more serious.

You can’t hide your hands so don’t forget about keeping your nails healthy and looking great. The above tips might just make you re-think how you are treating your nails and keep brittle nails at bay.
