Turmeric is that beautiful orange-yellow spice found in many Indian dishes. It happens to be an excellent source of antioxidants too and is beneficial with the fight against inflammation. Turmeric is full of nutrients and health properties for your body.
Aside from adding it to your favourite Indian recipe, why not have a go at crafting it into a turmeric latte for the enjoyment of sipping it back instead.
Below, we have sourced a great turmeric latte recipe, from Kale and Chocolate, for you to try at home. This recipe will serve one.
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk
1 heaped tablespoon of fresh turmeric root, grated (or you can use approximately 2 teaspoons of turmeric paste instead – see below)
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 tablespoon of freshly grated ginger root (or 1 teaspoon of ground ginger if you don’t have fresh ginger available)
2 teaspoons of coconut oil
Raw honey or sweetener of your choice to taste (we recommend Manuka honey for its health benefits)
A pinch of black pepper (optional)
To make the turmeric paste, combine two parts turmeric powder with one part boiling water. Mix and store any extra in the fridge for up to five days.
Gently warm the almond milk or coconut milk in a small saucepan. Do not boil.
Add the turmeric, ginger and cinnamon.
Next, combine the coconut oil with the mixture and gently heat together until it is all melted.
Use a wire whisk or immersion blender to create a foam and continue to stir until mixture is frothy and heated through.
Stir in the honey or sweetener of your choice to taste.
Sprinkle your masterpiece with cinnamon if desired.
Sip, savour and enjoy.
To create an extra frothy latte, pour the contents into a high-speed blender in place of a wire whisk or immersion blender.
