Yerba Mate is Your New Tea Mate! Do the Benefits Really Outweigh Green Tea?

 When it comes to health, people seem to be getting more and more curious about all things green. I mean, take the massive boom of kale for example. Three years ago, you would have put the name ‘kale’ off as some type of rock. Now it’s on nearly everyone’s dinner plate, not to mention a featured favourite in smoothie machines!

 Will all its other benefits, we do have to let green tea off the hook here a bit. However, for those concerned, a possible alternative to green tea may be yerba mate. This is another natural ingredient, this time originating in the subtropical zones of South America.

 It is said that yerba mate comes in the strength of coffee, with the healthy properties of tea, and the same blissful emotion as eating chocolate – now I know I have your interest!

 Yerba mate tea has 196 active compounds as opposed to 144 in green tea. It is also reported to have 90% more antioxidants than green tea. It contains compounds like antioxidants, flavonoids, polyphenols, bioflavonoids, chlorogenic acid, theobromine, and theophylline.

 Of these impressively-named words, chlorogenic acid is worth a mention. It boosts cardiovascular health by keeping blood pressure under control and making sure the arteries are all cleaned and dusted. It also reduces oxidised small dense LDL particles. Yerba mate contains much more chlorogenic acid compared to green tea. Yerba mate is also good for diabetics and people who need to watch their blood sugar levels.

 To steer clear of any potential cancer risk through the smoked variety of yerba mate, its best to take the air-dried forms if you did want to give it a sample.
