How to Balance Your Hormones Through Diet

 As we grow older, it’s completely optional to grow up along the way. There are so many sayings that begin with “you’re only as old as…”. However, one thing we don’t have much choice over is the mechanics of our body and our hormone changes.

Along with age, or as I like to call it wisdom, comes teeny tiny changes in our bodies. Wrinkles appear more defined, our metabolism may slow a little, and gravity starts to set in (yep, the stage where your assets just aren’t as perky as they always once were). However, if you are feeling tired, lethargic and overly cranky or snappy, it could be a sign that your hormones are imbalanced, and this can start to happen as soon as your late twenties. Yes, that’s right; not even when gravity has taken its hold yet!

Some of the tell-tale signs that your hormone balance may be off are:

  • Weight gain for no explained reason
  • Mood swings
  • The feeling of despair or anxiety from time to time
  • Insomnia and trouble sleeping
  • Thinning of your hair or balding spots
  • A reduction in sex drive
  • Clouded thinking or forgetfulness
  • A tenderness of your breasts
  • Fluid retention
  • Feeling lethargic or a lack of energy

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and it is of a concern, check out a doctor who will assess all of your hormones. If you have an imbalance problem, you might look to switch to a low-carb diet and take at least one to two cups of bone broth a day. This arrangement will help with weight loss, lower your insulin levels, and heal inflammation, which are all contributing factors to balance of your hormones.

Low-fat diets are no good for this purpose as hormones are made up from fats. So, eating healthy fats which could include coconut oil, avocado, oily fish, olive oil, nuts and pastured butter are beneficial.
